Just as commercial airline pilots have to undergo simulator training to fly their planes, many maritime jobs require ship officers to master a simulator that displays all sorts of situations that could occur on a sea voyage.

    Tim Dellapenna, associate professor of marine sciences and oceanography who has studied Texas beaches for years at the Texas A&M Galveston campus, has identified a potentially huge sand deposit off the waters of Follet's Island, a tiny barrier island near San Luis Pass, not far from Galveston. Follet's Island is only 14 miles long and less than a quarter mile wide and protects nearby Christmas Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway from severe storms from the Gulf of Mexico.

    Dr. David Wells, assistant professor of marine biology on the Texas A&M-Galveston campus, and his graduate students will spend the next 20 days attaching satellite tags to sharks in order to record the minute-by-minute movements of each tagged shark. Although there are dozens of types of sharks in the Gulf, Wells and his research team will focus on three: the scalloped hammerhead, tiger and shortfin mako shark due to the large data gaps for these economically important species.
