According to the initial reports from a Galesburg Police Department investigation, the 23-year-old Smith was found unresponsive just before 7 p.m. Saturday in the bottom of Cedar Fork roughly 75 yards east of Academy Street.

    Galesburg police have said in recent weeks that ice meth, also known as crystal meth, has "flooded" west-central Illinois. Ice meth, which is imported into the area from Iowa after being produced in so-called super labs in Mexico and on the West Coast, is apparently so prevalent that a person can find it under their car in a parking lot.

Knox County Assistant State's Attorney Brian Kerr said, in response to Judge Shipplett's question, “I don't see any reason we wouldn't be ready” in October. Defense attorney Mike Bianucci, based out of Chicago, requested a continuance during Monday morning's pretrial hearing as discovery, or the exchange of evidence between attorneys, continues.

Alfaro, 21, West First Street, is charged with felony counts of manufacture/delivery of cannabis between 30 and 500 grams, resisting a peace officer and aggravated battery to a peace officer as well as traffic offenses of driving on a suspended/revoked license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and unsafe backing on a roadway.

Dozens of faculty members were notified over Thanksgiving break they will no longer be scheduled to teach courses that transfer to four-year colleges.
