    The Department of Justice announced Friday that the University of Florida has agreed to pay the United States $19.875 million to settle allegations that the university improperly charged the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for salary and administrative costs on hundreds of federal grants. The grants in question were administered from the University of Florida campuses that are in Gainesville and Jacksonville, according to the DOJ.

    A crime spree that involved a stolen car in Gainesville and two cases of shoplifting in Putnam County ended late Saturday night in Bradford County after a high-speed chase, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Putnam deputies received a call about 3 a.m. Saturday about a shoplifting incident at the Kangaroo Express in East Palatka.

    A Gainesville kidnapping victim was rescued Tuesday morning by U.S. marshals after Alachua County Sheriff's Office investigators were able to trace the victim to Louisiana, deputies said. The victim, a City College student, left her classes at 10 a.m. Monday, leaving behind her books, cellphone, purse and other personal belongings.
