    Mary Frances Mays Kane, better known as "The Story Lady," has donated her collection of more than 10,000 books and story props for children to her alma mater, Stephen F. Austin State University. Beginning in the summer, Chair of SFA's Department of Elementary Education Dr. Liz Vaughan, pictured, and additional SFA faculty members began cataloging and organizing the collection and story props in the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center, Second Floor Resource Room.

    U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is declining to endorse fellow Texas Republican Ted Cruz for re-election to the Senate in 2018, just as Cruz did not back Cornyn for another term two years ago. Cornyn, the Senate majority whip, told CNN on Wednesday that he is "not going to get involved in any primary races, particularly with my colleagues in the Senate."

    STAAR exams, a panel tasked with developing recommendations on the future of standardized testing in Texas decided against proposing to eliminate the test. As the Tribune's Isabelle Taft wrote , the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability met Monday and agreed to recommend that the Legislature explore alternatives to the test, meaning any big changes could be years away.

    As displeasure with Texas' standardized testing regime mounts, all eyes are on a special panel the Legislature created last year to figure out whether to scrap the widely reviled STAAR exam. The 15-member Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability , scheduled for its second-to-last meeting Monday, has been studying alternatives to the high-stakes tests, which state law requires 5th and 8th graders and high schoolers to pass to move to the next grade level or to graduate.
