Rising stand-up comedian Pete Correale will be a guest on TBS' "Conan," with host Conan O'Brien, airing at 11 p.m. Correale, who has appeared on other late-night shows with Jay Leno, David Letterman and Carson Daily, told the OBSERVER he is looking forward to appearing on O'Brien's show for the first time.

    After studies, rallies and a public hearing that drew more than 2,000 people, the New York State Public Service Commission approved the repowering of the NRG Dunkirk coal-burning plant to a natural gas-fired plant. All the while this was transpiring, from NRG's announcement that it wanted to mothball the plant in March 2012 to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Dunkirk visit Dec. 15, 2013 to announce the repowering would happen, there has been opposition.

    While the loss of Carriage House's nearly 425 local jobs is a tough pill for the community to swallow, officials at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church on Central Avenue want to demonstrate that this area is still home to some of the most generous people around. The church is sponsoring the Feeding Fredonia Challenge, a week-long endeavor to collect 5,000 pounds of food for the newly created Fredonia Food Pantry.

    When the closing of Carriage House was announced by its parent company ConAgra in March, there were 395 workers in the Fredonia Carriage House, seven more at its Talcott Street facility and 21 more workers at the Lakeside Warehouse on Stegelski Avenue. Layoffs were originally scheduled to begin Oct. 24 with the plant to close by May 24, 2015.
