Elise Stefanik before the president landed to sign the National Defense Authorization Act at Fort Drum. The rally was union-sponsored, with Service Employees International Union 1199 the primary organizer, but participation included members from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, New York State United Teachers, the state Council of Churches and Planned Parenthood of New York.

    The New York Power Authority is celebrating 60 years of generating low-cost renewable energy at its St. Lawrence-Franklin Delano Roosevelt Power Project with a community celebration and an historical retrospective featuring photos, presentations and memorabilia from the very beginning of the plant's construction. The project, which first made power in July 1958, was the first large hydroelectric plant in New York State and contributes, along with NYPA's other generating plants, up to 20 percent of New York State's energy, the bulk of which is clean, renewable hydroelectric power.

McCullough Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center to reminisce about their days with the Power Authority.

    Under a sun-splashed sky, several dignitaries gathered with a group of miner trainees Tuesday morning to celebrate the resurrection of a century-old zinc mine that had been closed since 2008 and now employs more than 200 people with plans to expand. Empire State Mines, a subsidiary of Titan Corp., Toronto, purchased the former St. Lawrence Zinc Mine in late 2016, began production in January and sent out its first shipment of zinc concentrate in March.

    A new study suggests that there may some challenges to moving more veteran health care from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to private providers in New York state. Though Rand Corp. researchers concluded most providers in the state are able to provide timely care and follow clinical practice guidelines, “most also know little about the military or veterans, are not routinely screening for conditions common among veterans, and are unfamiliar with VA.” New York was noted for having the nation's fifth-largest veteran population, and the fourth-highest level of state spending on veteran medical services.
