    A team of nine young adults, ages 18 to 24, from as far away as Washington, D.C., and as near as Richmond, California, will camp out with Mendocino Land Trust for five weeks this summer to begin building a new trail at Shady Dell on the Lost Coast, located north of Fort Bragg. The team's primary goals are to remove brush and low-hanging branches from the southern half of the 2.3-mile-long trail, to create the “tread” or actual walking surface of the trail, and to begin the construction of hundreds of dirt steps that are needed to comfortably climb a steep portion of one part of the trail.

The hillside project, which has run months past its scheduled completion, emerged as a major obstacle to the Skunk's Fort Bragg operations last winter, after heavy rains in January caused a large amount of earth around the tunnel's western side to collapse onto the tracks.

    The City of Fort Bragg has released grant funds for the purchase of the Old Coast Hotel as a mental health and homeless services center after a judge denied a preliminary injunction brought against the project by a group called Concerned Citizens of Fort Bragg . Judge Richard Henderson ruled Monday against the injunction, which would have prohibited the release of Community Development Block Grant funds to the Mendocino Coast Hospitality Center for the purchase of the Old Coast building until a court hearing, now scheduled for Oct. 5. “His decision was to not grant the injunction, but there's still a case pending.
