    Four vessels had been put in queue last week until a fifth ship, the Federal Biscay, could be pulled out of the ice near Snell Lock, where it had sat immobilized since Jan. 2. It was freed from the ice on Saturday afternoon, with the assistance of tugs and the use of high-pressurized steam to melt the ice surrounding the vessel. On Monday, The Beatrix, Billesborg and MITIQ were all on their way, while the Pacific Huron and Federal Biscay remained delayed at Snell Lock.

    A ship that became stuck in the ice Tuesday at Snell Lock in Massena remained stuck as of late Wednesday afternoon. The Federal Biscay remained stuck in the ice after two tugs were used for more than seven hours on Tuesday in an attempt to free the vessel, according to a Twitter post from Michael Folsom, who owns The Shipwatcher, a website that details vessel traffic.

    As shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway comes to a close Sunday, 2017 will finish with overall improvements in shipping compared with last year. Overall shipping between March 20 and Nov. 30 saw a more than 8 percent increase compared with the same period last year, with 33.6 million metric tons of cargo shipped.

    A cargo ship has run aground in the middle of the St. Lawrence River between Fishers Landing and the Thousand Island Park. The U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation reported that the 623-foot cargo ship M/V Pacific Huron ran aground in the Seaway late last night while shipping soybean to Montreal.
