Steven Kilmeade, 49, of Bayport, was operating his 33-foot Egg Harbor sport fishing boat in an eastbound direction when the boat hit a sand bar northeast of East Channel buoy number 11, off East Fire Island in the Great South Bay.

According to police, 49-year-old Steven Kilmeade, of Bayport, was operating his 33-foot Egg Harbor sport fishing boat in an eastbound direction when the boat hit a sand bar northeast of East Channel buoy number 11, off East Fire Island around 10:40 p.m. When the boat struck the sand bar, one of the passengers, 40-year-old Dustin Damrau, of Medford, was thrown forward, causing him to suffer a head injury, police said.

Officials said the command center for Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound got a call from a 28-foot Albin on VHF-FM channel 16 reporting that their vessel was disabled and they needed rescue at 1:23 p.m., the Coast Guard said in a news release.
