High school students in northwest Washington grieved two classmates who were killed when an SUV jumped a curb and plowed into a group of teens on a walk during gym class. About 30 students from Windward High School in Ferndale, about 13 miles south of the Canadian border, were walking with a teacher Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle struck four teens on a sidewalk, Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Francis said. The Washington Education Association says members of the union from eight school districts plan to hold one-day strikes to protest legislative inaction on education funding reform. The WEA says Arlington, Lakewood and Stanwood-Camano teachers will strike April 22. Bellingham and Ferndale teachers plan to strike April 24. Teachers in Mount Vernon, Blaine and Sedro-Woolley have approved strikes, but haven't selected days yet. Comment?
Think the concerns about the dangers of more and more oil trains crossing the country and our state are overstated? Think again. During the last week of January, McClatchy New Service's Washington D.C. Bureau reported that state and federal officials are investigating an oil spill from a railroad tank car at the BP Cherry Point refinery last November, but key agencies didn't know about it for at least a month. During a couple of panel discussions with legislators in Olympia on Friday as they warmed up for the start of the 2015 legislative session today, more than a few legislators found it necessary to assure reporters and the public that they'd be able to get everything on a very loaded agenda done in the 105 days they have allotted. Good on them if they can do it, but, considering the things they've kicked down the road previously, we're more concerned with what they get done than when. Comment?
