    In a few weeks, the fairgrounds in Ferndale will be awash with the smell of fry oil and children's gleeful screams as the 122nd annual Humboldt County Fair gets underway. Meanwhile, the Humboldt County Fair Association - the nonprofit that runs the fair - and the county of Humboldt have been meeting behind closed doors to hammer out a lease agreement that will allow the association to operate the fairgrounds and put on the fair for the next five years.

The event also includes a Barn Hunt on July 21 and 22 where dogs use their instincts to sniff out rats hidden in tubes.

    On March 27, 1912, the Fortuna Advance newspaper ran an article headlined, "Black Man Rides White Man Thrown." The Advance reported that a "bronco busting exhibition given by Jeff Stall the colored dare-devil from Ferndale" took place March 24 "at the old fairgrounds in Rohnerville."

    The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors took what some might consider a long-overdue action Tuesday on the issue of shooting on unincorporated land, unanimously voting in favor of a county ordinance that would prohibit target shooting in any area that does not meet standards for safe shooting. Those standards require a 20-foot birm of packed earth behind the target area.

    Friends and family gathered at Belotti Hall in Ferndale May 20 to celebrate the life of Robert "Curley" Tait, a former model and Chicago blues nightclub owner who for much of his life was well known and well loved for his restaurant, Curley's Bar and Grill, which served California-style favorites for 16 years in Ferndale. The restaurant closed in 2011, re-opening briefly at a new location in Fortuna, but according to Tait's obituary, the spunky octogenarian - who had open heart surgery in 2001 - had found other hobbies, including teaching a Jazzercise class.
