However, starting a bit before the arts get alive, Redwood Acres is hosting Acres of Blues which is a two-day blues festival starting at 9 a.m. this morning with musical acts Laurie Morvan Band, Lydia Pence and Cold Blood, Volkler Strifler, Pearl Alley Band and The Jim Lahman Band.

    On an unusually hot, sunny day on Sunday in Ferndale at the Humboldt County Fair, the Junior Livestock Auction attracted a large crowd of willing and generous bidders on the well-fed and well-cared-for animals and birds offered for sale by 250 local young 4-H and Future Farmers of America exhibitors. Many individuals and businesses responded eagerly to the auctioneer, and the bids for the "champion" level animals and birds often far exceeded the current market price.

    The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced this morning that it is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Shawn Eugene Hof Jr., a 25-year-old man accused of shooting at an officer last year. Hof, who was the focus of a recent raid in Ferndale that came up empty, was allegedly involved in a high-speed pursuit on State Route 36 on Aug. 21, 2016 and is accused of opening fire on a pursuing Fish and Wildlife officer.

    In this oh-so-polarized country of ours, it's important to give voice to the voiceless, to make sure people hear the unpopular opinions of the day, right? After all, without unpopular opinions we never would have had child labor laws, women's suffrage, the civil rights movement or an end to the Vietnam War. But we live in a day and age when it can be hard to give voice to an unpopular opinion even a trivial one and that's a problem.

    The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting of one of the three famed zebras that lives on Mattole Road near Petrolia. Sheriff William Honsal said his office received a report of the shooting Saturday morning, saying it appears someone used a small caliber rifle to fatally shoot the zebra sometime during the preceding night.
