This week of celebration ignites school spirit with daily theme activities, pep rallies, campus wide picnic and powder-puff football game followed by a bonfire pep rally on Thursday night at 7 p.m. "The Fuqua School Student Cooperative Association, Alumni Association, Varsity and JV cheerleaders, band, and countless faculty, staff and students work hard to make Homecoming the best week of the year," officials said in a press release. According to the release, in keeping with tradition, upper school students will participate in Fuqua's Day of Service, helping with community service activities in and around the Farmville area.

Though I don't usually write about out-of-state exhibitions of work by Arkansans - there are just too many - the show is so appropriate to the times that I thought I'd make note of it here and use the slideshow above as an example of some of the 50 works included in it.

    A Farmville man was sentenced to an active sentence of 25 years in jail Tuesday in Cumberland Circuit Court in connection to the sexual assault of a victim under 13 years old. Michael Tyrone Booker received 40 years in jail with 15 years suspended for a charge of sodomy of a victim 13 years or younger, 40 years in jail with 40 years suspended for a second count of the same charge and 20 years in jail with 20 years suspended for a charge of aggravated sexual battery.

    A disorderly subject at Woodforest Bank on Peery Drive in Farmville initiated a high-speed pursuit spanning from Farmville to Dillwyn on Tuesday afternoon after he left in a vehicle matching the description of a car stolen in Buckingham County earlier the same day. He left at approximately 1:09 p.m., and according to Town spokesperson Kate Pickett Eggleston, Longwood University police attempted a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle on High Street at approximately 1:17 p.m. "The vehicle failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, taking West Third Street out of town and turning north onto U.S. Route 15," said Eggleston.

    A public hearing regarding the intersection of Oak, Griffin and High streets was held by Farmville Town Council on Oct. 18 and saw approximately 12 residents speak, around seven of which spoke in support of a proposed roundabout. Town Manager Gerald Spates previously cited the three options for the intersection, realignment being one - which has a cost estimate from the town of around $1 million - and constructing a roundabout, recommended by the engineering firm McCormick Taylor, which performed a study on the intersection and estimated a roundabout would cost nearly $3.8 million.

    Farmville Town Council voted unanimously Oct. 11 to not only table requests to rezone 37 properties from R-3 Residential to R-3A Residential, but to remove the request from future meeting agendas. The vote took into consideration the Farmville Planning Commission's recommendation to table two controversial rezoning requests from Robert and Sherry Martin and Walk2Campus Holdings LLC while asking the town council to authorize the town manager to prepare a request for proposals for outside consultants to assist the town in updating its comprehensive plan and reviewing and proposing amendments to the town's zoning ordinance.
