    There has been a lot of negative discussion recently about the removal of acres of trees to create grassland habitat at the Crane Wildlife Management Area in East Falmouth. On a recent walk, I was greatly encouraged at the new life emerging from what looked like mass destruction. Along with numerous species of birds, observations on my short walk included: plants - birdsfoot violets, yarrow, oxeye daisy, goldenrod, wild strawberry, cinquefoil, milkweed, butterfly weed, winter cress, wild indigo, several grass species, apple, red cedar and other hardwoods; butterflies - black swallowtail, cabbage white, clouded sulfur, spring azure and painted lady.

    As the summer season of movie-watching begins, the Woods Hole Film Festival is kicking off its new Falmouth Film monthly series Saturday night with a sneak preview of “Peter and John.” Locally filmed on Nantucket by writer-director Jay Craven, “Peter and John” is based on Guy de Maupassant's 19th-century novel, “Pierre et Jienne.” Known for favoring a New England setting for his films, Craven chose Nantucket for the filming last spring. He will attend Saturday's screening and field questions and suggestions from viewers that may influence the final cut of the movie.
