    A Solano County Superior Court jury on Wednesday met for the sixth time to hear testimony and to determine if a Fairfield man - found guilty last year of repeatedly stabbing a woman at a Vacaville CVS drug store in August 2015 - committed the act of violence with premeditation and deliberation. If James E. Barnes, 44, is found guilty of the special finding, it will raise the second-degree charge of attempted murder to a first-degree level and he will face significant prison time.

Brempell, who is in his late 20s or early 30s, was arrested June 15, 2017, on suspicion of possession of child pornography, failing to update his sex offender registration, and for sending a nude photo of himself to someone he believed to be a minor, and talking online with a person he believed to be a minor, to arrange for a meeting to engage in lewd or lascivious behavior with a child.

    A Vacaville man accused of being drunk during a July 2017 vehicle collision that killed a 48-year-old woman will return to Solano County Superior Court in the coming days to face murder charges because of a prior DUI conviction. Thomas J. Astarita, a retired carpenter in his mid-60s, is scheduled to enter a plea at 8:30 a.m. April 24 in Department 9. Judge Carlos R. Gutierrez made his decision shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday after hearing arguments from Deputy District Attorney Barry Taira and Fairfield criminal defense attorney Brian R. Watson, the latter also asking the judge to suppress evidence that, Watson asserted, was obtained illegally by a Vacaville police officer.
