    The Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys has published a report on drill core from a Wainwright exploration well that illustrates the oil and gas reservoir potential of the Nanushuk Formation in the western North Slope. The coal-bearing rocks in the Wainwright well do not host conventional oil or gas, but are part of the Nanushuk Formation and similar to Nanushuk Formation rocks 150200 miles to the east, where economically significant conventional oil accumulations have been found.

    A year after the second-largest fire season on record in Alaska, the 2015 fire season is still smoking. The Alaska Division of Forestry has detected 16 "holdover" fires so far this season, including one on Saturday that ignited the 8,130-acre Medfra Fire now burning in a remote part of Southwest Alaska.

    Effective May 26, Alaska State Parks will implement a $5 per vehicle day-use fee at the Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area and Big Delta State Historical Park. In addition, overnight camping at the Whitefish and Olnes Pond campgrounds will be $15 per night and use of the boat launch near the Whitefish campground will be $10 per day.

    The Alaska Division of Forestry reminds residents that general burn permits for any open debris burning and the use of burn barrels are required from April 1 to August 31. Human-caused fires as a result of debris burning and the use of burn barrels are the leading cause of wildland fires in Alaska. Experience and statistics have shown that 75 percent or more of burn barrels in Alaska do not meet DOF specifications.
