    On June 21, 2016, governors of each U.S. state in the Great Lakes drainage basin unanimously agreed to let Waukesha, Wis., tap Lake Michigan for up to 8.2 million gallons per day - the first diversion of Great Lakes water allowed under the Great Lakes Compact, a 2008 interstate agreement which prohibits water from being sent outside the Great Lakes watershed basin. The Great Lakes Compact Council said Waukesha must return all that water as treated effluent piped to a Lake Michigan tributary, the Root River.
