    Elizabeth City Fire Department has suspended its second-in-command Tuesday following his arrest on charges that he assaulted his wife. Deputy fire chief Dale Allen Smith, 48, turned himself in around 11:15 a.m. Dec. 9 to Perquimans County deputies after his wife filed charges that morning when she was released from the hospital, according to Perquimans County Sheriff's Office.

    Elizabeth City Police responded to the area of Colonial Avenue and McMorrine Street in reference to a shooting in the early morning hours of November 28. Larry Donell Hunter, 30 years old of Elizabeth City and a cousin Tarvoris Rontea Jordan, 31 years old of Belvidere, NC had just left Checkmates nightclub when 4 to 6 shot rang out striking the vehicle Hunter was driving. Jordan was struck in the forehead just above the left eye.

    The Coast Guard assisted with the rescue of a boater Monday after the man's 33-foot sailboat caught fire five miles west of Windmill Point in the Chesapeake Bay. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a call from John Lee Brown Jr. stating his sailboat was on fire, around 10:40 a.m. A good Samaritan contacted the Coast Guard watchstanders and reported they had the burning sailboat in sight.
