There was a healthy discussion last week on a proposed idea to let neighborhoods ban fireworks locally at the Snohomish County Council's operations committee meeting on July 12. The proposal, created by Councilman Hans Dunshee, would allow neighborhoods to determine by petition among neighbors on whether people in their area can discharge fireworks by majority rule. The idea is similar to the no-shooting zones the county already has in place. Comment?
A change in grant funding focus at the local United Way is leaving area senior centers feeling left out. In 2013, five regional senior centers were collectively given $150,000 from the United Way, spread over three years. Comment?
On Feb. 1, a private roundtable meeting convened in Everett on how to grow the regional stock of low-barrier, low-income housing under what's called the Housing First model, which puts drug- and alcohol-addicted individuals under a roof first to rehabilitate later. This model addresses a segment of homeless people often turned away from traditional public housing who instead often regularly turn up at the emergency room or jail. Comment?
The weather outside was windy and wet but, it was cozy and warm inside the Evergreen Branch Library's meeting room, Dec. 8, where "Share with Your Mayor" took place for Stephanson to make himself available to participating Everett residents during the lunchtime hour. Stephanson set the intimate tone himself by relating his personal story, sharing that he was "born and raised in Pinehurst in Everett," attended Everett schools and Everett Community College before joining the U.S. Army.
