    The Wiscasset Ambulance Service was founded 40 years ago as a volunteer department providing emergency medical transport to Wiscasset, Alna, Edgecomb, and Westport Island. The service's anniversary coincides with a budget proposal that will transform the department from a volunteer-driven service to a department with paid 24/7 station coverage - a proposal voters will either approve or reject at the annual town meeting by referendum Tuesday, June 14. The transition away from a volunteer department would have happened eventually, due to a broad industry shift that has professionalized emergency medical services, Deputy Director Wendy Williams said.
