    An Orcas Island man who served a four-month jail term a year ago after brandishing a knife at a grocery store worker faces a new felony charge, possession of methamphetamine. On Oct. 24, Stanley Vincent Sing pleaded not guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, and was released on $10,000 bail pending trial, which is slated for Dec. 15. The 34-year-old was taken into custody on the morning of Oct. 19 outside the library, in Eastsound, where he had reportedly fallen asleep.

    The official fire-danger designation has dropped from "moderate" to "low" in the wake of recent rains and the arrival of fall, according to local fire officials. State law prohibits open burning in urban-designated areas, however, which means outdoor burning is not allowed in Eastsound, Lopez Village and the Town of Friday Harbor.
