    In addition to the increasing numbers of a wide variety of shorebirds along the coast, other outstanding sightings last week included an Audubon shearwater off Gooseberry Neck in Westport, a brown pelican seen in flight off Halibut Point in Rockport, a bar-tailed godwit observed between Nauset Beach in Eastham and Tern Island in Chatham, a south polar skua several miles east of Cape Ann, and a Franklin's gull at Crane Beach in Ipswich. Plum Island : Reports from Parker River Refuge include 80 black scoters, two or three least bitterns, at least 3,500 peep sandpipers, a Baird's sandpiper, 20 lesser yellowlegs, 120 short-billed dowitchers, a black tern, a yellow-billed cuckoo, and several saltmarsh and seaside sparrows.

The website reported that a lobsterman by the name of Gil Mitchell snagged a great white dubbed " Cisco " near Thacher Island, located roughly a mile from the small seacoast community .

    Researchers have been watching as a young Great White shark travels along the New England coast over the past few days, including observing a visit to Cape Cod and the area near Wellfleet Harbor Wednesday. The non-profit research group OCEARCH tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the shark, nicknamed "Cisco," was near North Eastham, where a transmitter on the animal "pings tight to beach."

    A male king eider was seen by many birders at the herring run on the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne. Birds at Race Point in Provincetown included a very early Manx shearwater, 2 Pacific loons, a king eider, 250 red-throated loons, a red-necked grebe, 14 common murres, 3 thick-billed murres, 850 razorbills, 48 Iceland gulls, a lesser black-backed gull, and 2 snow buntings.

    The sedge wren and lark sparrow continued into the new year at Fort Hill in Eastham, where an American bittern was also seen. Highlights from the 20th Truro Christmas Bird Count included a Northern waterthush, a long-eared owl, a black-headed gull, a common murre, 2 common ravens, 14,000 black scoters, and a very late Osprey, all in Wellfleet, plus 27 Northern saw-whet owls from Wellfleet to South Truro, a greater yellowlegs in Pamet Harbor in Truro, and a Northern shrike, a palm warbler, and 3 common redpolls in North Truro.

    Highlights from the Buzzards Bay Christmas Bird Count included a sedge wren in Sandwich, a king eider in Falmouth, and a rufous hummingbird continuing at a private feeder in Falmouth. The 85th annual Cape Cod Christmas Bird Count, which extends from Harwich to Eastham, tallied 115 species, with highlights including the continuing lark sparrow from Fort Hill in Eastham, a Northern goshawk and a red knot in Orleans, a late Baltimore oriole in Harwich, 4 yellow-breasted chats in Chatham, and a black-headed gull and a snowy owl at Nauset Beach.
