According to information from the School District of Pickens County and EPD, the arrest and resulting charges were the culmination of a series of events that had begun "a couple of days earlier" with the theft of an undisclosed amount of money from a desk in a classroom.

Before taking the job in Easley in 2006, Simons was employed as Interim Finance Director and Budget Administrator by the City of Greenville.
