    The Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday night authorized new subdivision regulations that officials said were aimed at spurring more housing construction and lowering price tags for first-time homebuyers. The ordinance passed on a night in which the Assembly was visited by Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, who has been making rounds to local governments promoting his plan to close the state's $3 billion budget gap between revenues and expenditures.

    Oil companies would get $288 million in cash subsidy payments under a new capital and supplemental budget bill released Monday by the Alaska Senate's Republican-led majority. The subsidy payments were contained in the supplemental part of the bill, Senate Bill 23. The supplemental is usually for fixing overruns in the previous year's budget - but it can also serve as a vehicle for expenses that lawmakers don't want on the books in the next fiscal year.

    One person was critically injured Friday morning when a vehicle hit a light pole on the Glenn Highway near Eagle River, Anchorage firefighters said. Anchorage Fire Department deputy chief Erich Scheunemann said the collision, inbound on the Glenn near the Hiland Road exit, was initially reported at about 10:30 a.m. AFD crews responded in about four minutes, but weren't immediately able to remove the injured driver.
