The observation room is full of museum-like glass cases, some showcasing the anatomy of butterflies and moths, others containing thumb-sized caterpillars that will themselves soon sprout into butterflies.

    On June 8, Middlesex Community College hosted its 19th annual Celebrity Forum, "An Evening with David Ortiz," at Lowell Memorial Auditorium, to benefit student scholarships. The auditorium, all dressed up to resemble Fenway Park, was slammed with 1,500 baseball fans waiting in the stands to see their hero, "Big Papi!" In the dugout, a VIP cocktail reception of 325 fans anxiously waited to meet and have their photo taken with the legendary player, who retired after last year.

    Superintendent of Schools Steven Stone has been given a new five-year contract, three years ahead of his contract expiration and extending his tenure in the school district through 2022. The School Committee split 3-2 on the new deal on Monday night: Chairman Joseph Wilkie, Vice Chair Daniel O'Connell and member Betsy Murphy voted in favor, while members Allison Volpe and Sabrina Heisey voted no.

    The School Committee on Monday voted 3-2 to give Superintendent of Schools Steven Stone a five-year contract and a salary raise, three years ahead of his contract expiration in 2020. School Committee Chairman Joseph Wilkie made the motion after announcing that the committee had reached a tentative agreement with Stone on a contract through 2022.

    A 45-year-old Dracut man who was arrested in March was recently cleared of charges he impersonated a police officer, though he continues to face felony firearms charges in connection with the same incident. Kevin Lessard, of Dracut, was arrested by Tyngsboro police on March 4, after he pulled his maroon Ford Crown Victoria with white flashing lights behind a woman whose vehicle was broken down on Pawtucket Boulevard near the Vesper Country Club.
