    The Georgia Department of Education released its spring 2018 Georgia Milestones results at the end of July, showing gains in Douglas County schools from last year in several areas, including fourth-, fifth-, six-, seventh- and eighth-grade English/Language Arts , third through seventh grade mathematics; fifth and eighth grade science and social studies; Algebra I and physical science. Georgia Milestones includes End of Grade assessments in third through eighth grade and End of Course assessments in grades nine through 12. This is the fourth year that GMAS test is being used by the state to assess students.

    The Douglas County Political Action Committee says there was a breach of privacy with regard to the county's Connect Douglas Final Report from Collaborative Firm that included the names of those attending town hall meetings on the proposed bus system in the appendix of a report that was then displayed on the county's website for several days. The document "Communication Plan," prepared by the Collaborative Firm, which has been posted on the Douglas County website, was said to include names, addresses and cell phone information on attendees.

    The Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved accepting the CMAQ Transportation Grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission for a four-route county-wide bus system during Tuesday's regular session. The vote was 3-2 along party lines with District 4 Commissioner Ann Jones Guider and District 3 Commissioner Mike Mulcare - both Republicans - opposing; Guider and Mulcare are the same two commissioners who held the recent Open Forum on the proposed bus system.

Jason Spencer, R-Woodbine, to resign from the remainder of his term after a bizarre appearance on Sacha Baron Cohen's "Who Is America?" program on Showtime recently. But a press conference scheduled Wednesday for that purpose was canceled earlier this week after Spencer announced Tuesday night that he would resign from the remainder of his term in the Georgia House effective July 31, following many calls for him to do so.

    On Monday, July 16th, Marcus Strozier was sentenced by Superior Court Judge William H. "Beau" McClain on two counts of robbery for his role in a robbery of the RaceTrac on Thornton Road in December of 2015. Strozier, a seven-time convicted felon with multiple previous robbery convictions, was sentenced by Judge McClain to 20 years with the first 10 years to be served in prison.

    The Westin Hotel planned for Foxhall Resort is expected to start construction by early next year, but could begin as early as December, according to Chris Pumphrey, executive director of the Development Authority of Douglas County. The hotel and conference center at Foxhall Resort and Sporting Club was green-lighted by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in 2016, but spent time late last year restructuring its financial plan for the project, after initial plans bogged down.
