    Of the 921 students enrolled in the fall 2017 semester at Lees-McRae College, 475 students - over half of enrolled students at the college - finished with academic honors, landing on either the President's or Dean's lists.     U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Paul D. Hayes Jr. graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.     Despite a snowstorm that dumped half of a foot of snow on Dobson and the surrounding areas Dec. 9, approximately 12 members of the Surry Community College baseball team met up at Surry Central High School to help Sheriff Jimmy Combs and his department deliver 275 boxes of food to area families in need. Members of the Surry Knights load and deliver food to area families in need Dec. 9 despite a snowstorm that dumped six inches of snow on the area.

    Surry Community College offers many agricultural courses and workshops throughout the year; Good Agricultural Practices Training will be offered Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. GAP Certification is driven by produce buyers and training is recommended, in some cases required, by buyers. The class will be conducted using the USDA-GAP-GMP audit protocol and will focus on improving students' understanding of GAP to guide assessment of risks and implementation of practices to reduce risks on fresh produce farms.
