    A 2-year-old boy found his father's unsecured handgun under a couch in a Detroit home and accidentally shot himself about 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says. The child is expected to survive and his father, 24-year-old Johntauris D. Barber, is now charged with second-degree child abuse, felony firearm and a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession.

Shukur, 30, who graduated from the police academy in 2017, was assisting officers with crowd control outside a Detroit cabaret about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 4. While walking back to his patrol vehicle, a 19-year-old driver from Belleville struck Shukur while travelling at a "high rate of speed," Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said while announcing Shukur's death Wednesday, Aug. 15. Cole was charged with reckless driving causing serious impairment or loss of body function and failure to stop at the scene of a crash causing serious impairment or death, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
