    An ex-con who fatally shot his girlfriend during a fit of rage over her using methamphetamine without him in Perris was sentenced Friday to 62 years to life in state prison. Martin Jason Estrada, 43, of Desert Hot Springs was convicted in May of first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, with sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations, for the slaying of 45-year-old Rachel Davis of Banning in 2015.

    The 16-year-old gunshot victim who had been dropped behind a 7-Eleven in Yucaipa on Saturday by motorists who then fled had earlier attempted to burglarize the home of a 69-year-old man who owns a gun, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. The teenage boy, who is a Desert Hot Springs resident, and two other men had tried to break in to a home in the 33000 block of Wallace Way in Yucaipa, a news release said.

    Two people left a 16-year-old Desert Hot Springs boy with a gunshot wound to the abdomen behind a convenience store in Yucaipa and sped off Saturday evening, July 14, sheriff's deputies said. The teen, who was only identified by his hometown, was taken out of a vehicle and left behind the 7-Eleven store at Yucaipa Boulevard and 14th Street just before 6:15 p.m., police said.

    Warmer weather is drawing rattlesnakes out of their lairs and onto walking paths, yards and other places where Inland Empire residents might be, so be careful, an official warned Friday. According to Riverside County Department of Animal Services Senior Public Information Specialist John Welsh, in the last two weeks, the agency has received multiple calls regarding rattlesnakes near residences, prompting animal control officers to catch and release them into the wild.

Flames were reported in heavy brush at 4:11 p.m. Tuesday at several spots east of the intersection of Palm Drive and 20th Avenue, said April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

    A Thousand Palms man charged with allegedly stabbing a man to death in Desert Hot Springs was previously imprisoned for manslaughter in connection with the 2011 slaying of an Ontario resident during a carjacking outside the victim's home. Joseph Arrez, 37, is charged with the fatal stabbing of 37-year-old Edwin Carreto, whose body was found at 10:35 p.m. Oct. 21 at a home in the 66500 block of Fourth Street.
