    A 67-year-old man was sentenced to 38 days in jail after pleading guilty to a single felony count of animal cruelty for tightly wrapping rubber bands around a puppy's mouth, causing a severe injury, county animal services officials said Friday. Brian Patrick Murphy of Desert Hot Springs also faces three years of formal probation and cannot own an animal for 10 years, Riverside County Department of Animal Services officials said.

    Five people have been arrested following a string of burglaries, drug charges and weapons violations that occurred in the Coachella Valley over the holidays. The investigation began after officers with the Palm Desert Police Department responded to a stolen UPS package that was taken from a residence near the 77000 block of Michigan Drive around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23. They found the suspect's vehicle, a stolen Hyundai out of Indio, with several other items that were believed to be stolen.
