    Nine months after its worst flood on record, Denham Springs is still riding a wave of increased sales tax revenues that city officials hope will carry them through another fiscal year. Meeting Tuesday to discuss the 2017-18 budget, Mayor Gerard Landry told the City Council that other mayors who had dealt with similar natural disasters said sales tax revenue, which makes up two-thirds of Denham Springs' general fund, likely would remain buoyed as more businesses rebuild and reopen.

    During a debate over the $29 billion spending plan for the budget that begins July 1, lawmakers rejected a proposal that aimed to direct $190 million from the state's federal flood recovery aid and put it toward the Comite River diversion project. Rep. Valarie Hodges, R-Denham Springs, had suggested that more than 10 percent of the $1.6 billion the state has received to aid the recovery from floods in north Louisiana last March and across south Louisiana last August, should go to the long-stalled capital region flood mitigation project.
