    Martin Zaninovich, co-founder of Delano, Calif.-based Jasmine Vineyards Inc. and a leader in the California table grape industry at a critical time in its history, died Dec. 9. In 1966 he became the first recipient of the Mentors Award from the California Fresh Fruit Association, known then as the California Grape & Tree Fruit League. "When you consider the trials and tribulations of the 1970s and the labor strife that was going on in Delano, he did an amazing job representing the growers and shippers," said Barry Bedwell, president of the Fresno-based California Fresh Fruit Association.

    California grape volumes will likely be lower than last year, and Delano, Calif.-based Columbine Vineyards expects to be at least 10% under last year, said Anthony Stetson, sales manager. The persistent drought in California meant less water for grapes, which meant smaller sized fruit and subsequently lower volumes, Stetson said.
