    Decorah City Council members have scheduled a series of informational meetings to interact with the public on issues surrounding the May 1 referendum regarding establishment of a municipal electric utility. The issue of exploring a locally controlled municipal electric utility has been discussed in the community since early last year but the question has been put to the voters of the community when the Council approved a resolution in February calling for a special election.

    While the Iowa Utility Board has the ultimate say on whether a municipal electric utility is in the community's best interest, the Decorah City Council will have several steps to take before submitting an application to establish a MEU for the city. If a simple majority of residents vote in favor of pursuing a MEU during the May 1 referendum on the matter, the Council will need to decide what it does with that authority, according to City Manager Chad Bird.

    Live Healthy Iowa has selected Decorah for one of 19 communities across Iowa to serve as host sites for the 5th annual Live Healthy Iowa 5K events Saturday, April 14. The Decorah event begins and ends at Winneshiek Medical Center. The 5K portion of the event begins at 8 a.m. with the 1K kid's run following at 9 a.m. On-site registration for both events is open the morning of the race at 6:45 a.m. All participants will receive a Live Healthy Iowa 5K T-shirt, race number, finisher medal and the opportunity to win door prizes.

    Several unlocked vehicles on the west side of Decorah were reportedly burglarized between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday, according to Decorah Police. Anyone who believes their vehicle was entered, had property stolen from their vehicle or who observed suspicious activity should contact the Decorah Police Department at 563-382-3667.
