    A fire at an old fertilizer plant in Ossian caused the evacuation of students from DeSales School and Childcare Center in Ossian Friday afternoon. The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a fire at Farmers Union Coop in Ossian at about12:15 p.m. The plant still contained fertilizer.

    A request to amend the city's flag-display policy in conjunction with an upcoming event has prompted the Decorah City Council to schedule a review of the policy by the Council's betterment committee. Melissa Koch, chair of the Decorah Human Rights Commission, asked the Council Monday night for an amendment that would allow rainbow Pride flags to be flown in the downtown district the weekend of May 11-13.

The issue of exploring a locally controlled municipal electric utility has been discussed in the community since early last year and in February the Council approved a resolution calling for a special election on the issue.
