With education special local option sales tax money, the McDuffie County school system has been able to make needed repairs and upgrades to Thomson Elementary, Dearing Elementary and Maxwell Elementary over the past two summers as well as build a new Norris Elementary.

According to Mayor Sean Kelley, National Night Out will be held Aug. 2 at the Dearing Track, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. McDuffie County Sheriff's Office Deputy Barry Whitfield and Dearing Mayfest Committee member Becky Craven are organizing the 2016 National Night Out.

Several area churches partnered to bring the 15th year of Mission: McDuffie to fruition. Beginning with a kickoff that occurred on June 5 at First Baptist Church of Thomson, 65 student volunteers, grades six through 12, and 20 adult volunteers began their week of service.

    McDuffie County Schools will be offering a Seamless Summer nutrition program for students aged 18 and younger during the summer, beginning May 23. The summer nutrition program began in 1997 under the direction of Sheryll Childers, according to Kim Carter, the manager of the program. 'We can serve anyone under the age of 18 as well as mentally-challenged students,';Carter said.

    The truck shown above rolled at least one time after it was stolen from a home on Adams Chapel Road in Dearing on April 24. It took a few hours but law enforcement caught a Dearing man who stole a truck from an Adams Chapel Road home and crashed on Augusta Hwy. at Boneville Pond Road.

    McDuffie County leaders are moving forward with repair of the Rock House and are considering creating a planning committee to help coordinate community involvement in improving the property. McDuffie County voters approved a $23 million tax referendum to finance capital projects in McDuffie County, the City of Thomson and the Town of Dearing through sales tax collections for six years, beginning Jan. 1, 2016.

    A Chevrolet pickup collided with the back of the parked tractor-trailer, which resulted in the death of six-year-old boy on March 10. A six-year-old Dearing boy has died from injuries sustained in a March 10 accident on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County. At approximately 5 p.m., McDuffie County dispatch received a call about a wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup on Interstate 20 near mile marker 170, westbound.

    In its February meeting, the McDuffie County Board of Education introduced a resolution to reimpose the one-percent sales tax for education, also known as SPLOST. The BOE wants the special option local sales tax to be continued for no more than 20 calendar quarters, or five years, and the board wants to raise no more than $19 million for several projects throughout the school district.

    One of the men arrested after a hoverboard sale turned into an armed robbery at Grovetown High School Feb. 14 is a resident of Dearing and a student at Thomson High School. Dondrell L. Howard, 18, of the 4500 block of Hillman Gay Road was arrested with Deonte A. Dorsey, 19, of Harlem after the Grovetown man they robbed at gunpoint followed them to an apartment in Richmond County.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office issued arrest warrants for David Wade Jr., 43, of Dearing and Robert Edmond Brown, 52, of Lincolnton, for the murder of Charles 'Chip' Edward Ridenour Jr., 39, of Augusta.

    A Dearing man and a Lincolnton man are being sought by law enforcement for the murder of an Augusta man whose body was found near the shoulder of the road near the Jefferson County-McDuffie County line on Nov. 25. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has issued arrest warrants for David Wade, Jr., 43 of Dearing, and Robert Edmond Brown, 52, of Lincolnton, in the murder of Charles 'Chip' Edward Ridenour, Jr., 39, of Augusta. On Nov. 25, deputies responded to a 911 call about a dead body located near the shoulder of US Highway 221 north of Wrens, near the Jefferson County-McDuffie County line.

    The Rock House is now a McDuffie County owned entity. The McDuffie County Commission accepted ownership of the Rock House property from the Wrightsboro Foundation on Dec. 2. The transfer was made in order to increase the potential of receiving public and private funding to augment money to be received from upcoming penny sales tax collection to restore the Rock House.
