Arcata High School will host three community panel discussions on the various college options available to local students and offer tips for the transition process. The Northern Humboldt Union High School District and the Decade of Difference Initiative invite all high school students, their parents and members of the public to attend the free events to be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Arcata High School library at 1720 M St. The panel will discuss how to make the transition from high school to college easier for students. Eel River Recovery Project divers observed Eel River salmon displaying strange behaviors this past fall including lethargy and not swimming away when approached by humans. An ongoing UC Davis study is working to determine what the cause of this behavior might be, including the identification of a virus found in some of the salmons' brains. Comment?
Tire tracks running through riffles on the South Fork Eel River near High Rock show that the low flowing waters have allowed for crossings that are atypical for this time of year. Eel River Recovery Project board member Eric Stockwell said cars on the river could accidentally run over salmon eggs, which are lain at the head of these riffles. Comment?
