Two gray whale carcasses washed up in Santa Cruz County this week, prompting Long Marine Lab officials to investigate their deaths. The whales -- one at the northern end of the county and the other at the southern end -- were first reported Wednesday, but officials couldn't conduct necropsies when they were reported because of the tide, said Terri Sigler, marine mammal stranding coordinator for Long Marine Lab. California Highway Patrol helicopters conducted three rescues over the weekend, including two women Sunday who were stranded on a ledge at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, officials said. CHP received a call at 6:45 p.m. reporting missing hikers at the regional preserve area in Antioch, said Pilot James Andrews of the CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations Unit. Comment?
Trotting down the trail to Four Mile Beach in the past few weeks, some surfers have been stunned by the removal of two portable toilets that for years had stood near the end of the trail. Without bathrooms, some visitors have taken to the bushes and hillside, leaving waste and toilet paper to be washed by rain into the beach's wetland and the ocean. Comment?
After 30 years of owning sheep in the Santa Cruz Mountains, John Locatelli gave up the lifestyle last year, after his herd was wiped out by a puma. In two days in 2013, a mountain lion killed all nine of his sheep, said Locatelli, who then obtained a Department of Fish and Wildlife hunting permit but was not able to find the cat. Comment?
