The Ascension Parish School Board took a stab Tuesday at finalizing the list of projects it hopes to build with a $120 million bond it plans to bring before voters on April 9. The School Board has an Oct. 20 deadline to notify the state Bond Commission of the bond election to get the issue included on the April ballot. Many of the projects that would be paid for with the bond money were in a plan the previous School Board drew up as part of a long-term strategic plan to address problems of overcrowding in a school district that gets approximately 500 new students every school year. Ascension Parish officials outlined Thursday how spending as much as $5 million to buy a small Donaldsonville water company could improve the parish's medium-term finances and provide the infrastructure for Ascension to expand its utility business. The rosy assessments came as Parish President Tommy Martinez and various council members hashed through the prospects of buying Peoples Water Service Co. Comment?

Defense attorney claims $175,000 in cash missing from Porsche SUV seized by Ascension deputies after 2014 shootout in Darrow The defense attorney for four men facing second-degree murder charges from an April 2014 shootout in Darrow claimed Tuesday that $175,000 of his clients' cash is missing from their seized Porsche sport utility vehicle - an allegation Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley called "outrageous." Attorney Peter John said the money was in vacuum-sealed packages inside a bag in the trunk of the SUV before the vehicle was taken by the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office last year. Comment?

A Port Vincent woman posed late last year as an in-home barber at a victim's mobile home in a failed plot with an accomplice to rob the victim of cocaine and money. When the woman's armed accomplice broke through the door of the mobile home, demanding, "Give me your coke and your money," the victim told him he had nothing to give. Comment?
