    Cumberland County School Board members approved moving forward with becoming part of a coalition that will petition the state for increased funding for rural schools. The Coalfield Coalition currently consists of the localities of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Norton City, Russell, Scott, Tazewell and Wise, according to Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Dr. Amy Griffin.

    Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed an order Tuesday instructing the secretaries of the electoral boards in the counties making up State Senate District 22 - including Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward - to set a special election for Jan. 10 to fill the seat vacated by Tom Garrett. Voters elected Garrett to Virginia U.S. Congressional District 5, replacing Rep. John Hurt, who announced nearly a year ago he would not seek re-election.

    In an effort to draw more business and economic development to the Heart of Virginia, the Farmville-based Commonwealth Regional Council is seeking to unite its member and some non-member localities in developing and maintaining a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy , which could mean more grant money from the federal government. The CRC pitched the idea to Cumberland County supervisors, offering to waive the non-member match as an initial step of the program conditioned on one stipulation: Cumberland rejoin the CRC should the application for CEDS assistance be approved.

    A trial date of Dec. 12 is now set for Kelly Daniel Bass, 26, of Cumberland, accused earlier this year of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office arrested Bass on March 17 and initially charged him with object sexual penetration of a child.

    The men, Jesus T. Rodiguez, 20, of Cumberland - who, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, has known gang affiliations and is wanted on an armed robbery charge in Washington State - and Logan Renek, 19, of Cumberland, are charged with numerous felonies. The charges are connected to the break-ins and an assault call in the 1400 block of Anderson Highway early Tuesday morning that led to their arrests.
