    Many north country maple farmers agree with a recent study that producers can sell birch tree syrup for additional revenue, but have no immediate interest harvesting and selling their own. A multi-year study conducted by Cornell University's Uihlein Sugar Maple Research and Extension Field Station stated that producing birch syrup from sap is a viable source for additional revenue for maple producers because of its price and similar harvesting methods.

    Several Lewis County restaurants over the next couple weeks will be offering free coffee to patrons who fill out a short, confidential survey on suicide prevention. The Lewis County Suicide Prevention Coalition is holding a “Cup of Joe” campaign, starting today and running through March 4, through which patrons at several eateries will be offered a coupon for a free cup of coffee if they complete an attached survey card and accept some information about the warning signs of suicide, local resources and the national lifeline number.

    Lucas J. Boliver, 29, of 9739 Route 812, Croghan, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, also satisfying several other charges lodged against him. Sentencing was set for April 7. Mr. Boliver was accused of selling oxycodone May 18 in the town of Turin and Tramadol June 8 in Lowville.

    Last month the village Board of Trustees declared a dangerous tree and a condemned building emergency situations and set the wheels in motion to remedy the problems. Eager Beaver Tree Removal Services of Croghan began trimming small limbs from a rotting poplar tree at 602 Alexandria St. on Jan. 16, and continued Tuesday removing larger chunks.

    Alexandria Street from North Clinton to Francis in Carthage will be closed starting Monday for a couple of days while a dangerous tree is removed from 602 Alexandria St. Michael Boliver of Eager Beaver Tree Service, Croghan, said because of the height of the tree and close proximity to power lines they are proceeding slowly to take down the tree piece by piece. Mr. Boliver noted the chipped wood would be recycled used as a power source for the co-generation plant on Fort Drum.

    Jennifer Loonan, 56, Castorland, was charged by Lewis County sheriff's deputies with aggravated driving while intoxicated at 6:20 p.m. Monday after driving off the road while attempting a left-hand turn from Route 410 to Route 126 in the town of Croghan. Ms. Loonan had a blood alcohol content of 0.19 percent, just over the state aggravated DWI threshold of 0.18 percent, deputies said.
