Lowell was born in Watson, NY, on June 21, 1931, a son of the late Sidney F. and Sarah Mellnitz Virkler and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1949.

    Croghan firefighters at 6:24 p.m. were called to a heifer and dry cow barn at 6967 Texas Road owned by Terry Pominville and requested mutual aid from New Bremen, Beaver Falls and Castorland departments. “The workers were able to get most of the cows out of the barn; however, many were not able to get out in time,” Lewis County Fire Coordinator Robert A. MacKenzie III said in a release.
