While making a trip up to the Basin area this week I had to wait a few minutes at the traffic light at the Madden Branch bridge construction site on Hwy 64. During that pause I reflected on the difficulties I would have encountered just a few decades ago trying to make that same trip. For up until 1903 there was not a single bridge in all of Polk County spanning any of our rivers, the Hiwassee, Ocoee, Conasauga or Jacks - fathom that! Our little creeks and other streams would have been waded, jumped, crossed on stones, footlog, or a homemade wooden bridge. Comment?
On Saturday, June 27, 2015 the Etowah Historical Commission will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the completion of the Old Line Railroad between Etowah, TN and Copperhill, TN by offering a special train excursion to follow the same route taken on the first train that ran between Etowah and Copperhill in June of 1890. The Old Line Railroad was built in 1890 as part of an economic development project to link Knoxville to Atlanta by rail. Comment?
I'm sure many of you have no recollection of when you were able to flip a switch, or in my case, pull a string, and light up your house for the very first time. You have always had that convenience and totally take it for granted. Comment?
While looking for an obituary in the 1938 Copper City Advance this week, I ran across a headline in the 22 July 1938 issue that caught my attention: "A. Maloof, 70, is Dead in Assyria: Louis Maloof Gets Message of Father's Death Wednesday." Comment?
The Copperhill City Council met Monday November 17, 2014 with all members present. Items on the agenda included a presentation by the Tennessee Overhill Association, first reading of the city emergency plan, trash pickup discussion, Ocoee river mist project update, and Christmas bonuses for city employees.
