    Not so long ago, a state legislative committee on military affairs, along with some members of the Georgia congressional delegation and experts on military business and procurement procedures, made a stop at Fort Benning as part of a series of meetings at the state's armed services installations. The focus of the Benning meeting was the same as at all the others: to talk about ways to strengthen the case for Georgia's bases before the next Base Realignment and Closure process begins - which it inevitably will, even if we don't know when.

    The Muscogee County School District in Georgia has been awarded a $1.5 million federal grant over five years to fund a project designed to increase support for military dependent students' social and emotional well-being. The district will implement the project, called Easing Transitions and Fostering Resilience among Military Dependents, at its 10 eligible schools because they have at least 15 percent military-dependent students in their enrollment: Elementary schools - Double Churches , Eagle Ridge , Mathews , Midland and North Columbus Those schools total 1,725 military-dependent students, MCSD military student coordinator Darlene Register told the Muscogee County School Board during its work session Monday evening.

    The Columbus man who fatally shot his Stone Creek Court neighbor in a May 24 dispute over a paintball gun has been given bonds totaling $250,000. But if Timothy Tarr, a military police officer at Fort Benning, gets out of jail, he'll have to move away, because one condition Judge Frank Jordan Jr. set on Tarr's release from jail was that he not only stay away from the victim's family across the street, but that he stay away from the street itself, said his attorney, Jennifer Curry.
