    Two juveniles have been arrested in connection to a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of Blackville-Hilda High and Middle schools on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Barnwell County Sheriff Ed Carroll said his office was notified at 12:56 p.m. of the threat of a bomb at the high school. He said the threat was called into the school, but declined to give further details of the call.

Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman on August 8. First Baptist Church of Williston received the 2017 Civic Organization Volunteer Award from the State Board of Education and S.C. Department of Education "for their support of Kelly Edwards Elementary School with efforts that promote student achievement, recognition, and teacher appreciation," according to the award they received during a special celebration in Columbia on August 8. "We are making use of the gifts God gives us to be a blessing to our community," said Rev. Dr. Stephen Burnette, pastor of FBC Williston.

Emergency Management Division, has urged South Carolinians to prepare for the possibility of Hurricane Irma impacting the state. The executive order enables all state agencies to coordinate resources in preparation for Hurricane Irma, which is currently a category five hurricane.

    The Allendale County School District has filed a lawsuit seeking the S.C. Supreme Court's help in stopping the state from taking over control of the district's management. The lawsuit, which was filed June 21 by the school district, came two days after S.C. Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman announced a "State of Emergency" due to concerns about the academic performance of students.

    A police chase ended in a trip to the hospital for two men after wrecking the stolen vehicle they were in. Barnwell police officers responded to Shannon Street on Feb. 8 around 3:15 p.m. after the Lexington County Sheriff's Office advised that a stolen vehicle was pinging in that area.

A public hearing regarding cleanup of the superfund site is scheduled to be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Barnwell County Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. The public hearing concerns the former Starmet CMI facility and will be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Barnwell County Library starting at 6:30 p.m. Starmet is a former uranium processing plant that was shut down in 2002 and later was designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a superfund clean-up site.

    We hope this session will be a productive one because there is a lot of work that needs to be done to advance South Carolina into a better future. To do so, lawmakers from both parties and in both houses need to come together and make the necessary compromises on their stances on certain issues to get things done.
