Newberry's 71-49 victory Friday night in Prosperity over the Rebels still hasn't locked up or knocked out either team from the postseason but both teams may rely on each other to avoid wrapping up their seasons next week.

    The Sandlapper Singers, in collaboration with the USC Department of Music, will welcome internationally renowned composer Libby Larsen to Columbia for a repeat performance of "Falling" along with several other of Larsen's compositions. The performance will be held in Recital Hall at the Department of Music at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19. The Sandlapper Singers provide the emotional commentary to engage the audience, while the USC faculty quartet exposes the poetic text.

    With the boys teams of both Columbia High School and Newberry High looking for a regional game that would greatly boost their playoff potential, the Capitals were able to complete a regional sweep of Newberry on Monday in the Scott Gym with a 69-67 victory. Newberry turned a one-point lead after the first quarter, 18-17, into a two-point advantage at the break, 31-30.

    Newberry High School's Tyshyria Bates' three-pointer with three minutes to go in the first quarter put the Lady Bulldogs up for good Tuesday evening at Eau Claire as they improved to 14-4 on the season and 5-1 in regional play after their 61-36 victory. Already down by 16 at the half, Eau Claire had another thorn in its side as four of their seven players already had three or more fouls.

Leading by nine points after the first quarter, Newberry upped their advantage by a lone point in the second quarter to having the 36-26 lead at the break.

Newberry trailed by a point after the first quarter while both teams went into the locker rooms tied at 17-17 at the break.
