    A disagreement between satellite giant DirecTV and public broadcaster UNC-TV over the quality of the latter's signal has blacked out UNC-TV programming for DirecTV's customers in much of northeastern North Carolina. DirecTV customers in the region lost their channel link with UNC-TV Public Media North Carolina, which transmits its programming through station WUND-TV of Edenton/a Columbia, as of midnight July 1. That means DirecTV customers in Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck and five other counties in the region currently have no access to public television programming generated by UNC-TV.

    A University of North Carolina professor advocating creation of a fast-ferry system to link five "harbor towns" on the Albemarle Sound told local business leaders Wednesday his proposal has attracted the attention of the nation's largest private ferry operator. Nick Didow declined to release the company's name during his presentation to members of the Albemarle Area Committee of 100, but said a company official read about his proposal on a newspaper website, contacted him about it and asked for details.
