    A former Coloma police officer is accused of stealing heroin from the scene of a drug overdoes and using his position to steal codeine pills from a strong box used to safely collect throwaway drugs. Kraig Mitchell, 33, of Kalamazoo, was arraigned Friday, Feb. 17, in Berrien County on four felony counts related to crimes that occurred on Jan. 10. In a press release, Berrien County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Sepic stated that Mitchell was discovered to be in possession of a heroin/fentanyl mixture and codeine tablets while on the job as a police officer.

The Berrien County Prosecutors Office authorized charges of assault to do great bodily harm less than murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon against Trenton Norris, 34, of Porter, Indiana, according to a news release from Lincoln Charter Township Police.

"A preliminary investigation reveals that Larry Darnell Gordon disarmed one of the officers who were escorting him to a court hearing inside the Berrien County Courthouse," Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey told reporters at a 9 p.m. Monday press conference.
