    When I recently took over the prosecution of the case involving the collision between a sailboat and a motorboat in 2006 on Clear Lake, I was asking the question: Why do so many people support drunken sailors on the lake at night with their running lights off? It was very disturbing to find out the answer to that question, because it appears people are believing the information out there in the media that is wrong, false and misleading. That is disturbing enough on its own, but even more disturbing is that people have made up their minds based on that information and are not waiting to hear what evidence is presented in court.

    Nick Bennett was appointed Mayor of Clearlake Thursday evening by the Clearlake City Council, as Bruno Sabatier stepped down from the office and Russ Cremer was appointed vice mayor. In a break from tradition which would have seen former Vice Mayor Phil Harris appointed Mayor, the council unanimously approved newly-elected council member Dirk Slooten's nomination of Bennett and Cremer to the seats.

    The Lake County Board of Supervisors approved the second reading of an amended zoning ordinance to allow for manufacturing, distribution and testing of cannabis in some areas within Lake County. This amendment will allow cannabis businesses to apply for minor or major use permits to conduct manufacturing, distribution and testing of cannabis, Lake County Community Development Director Michalyn DelValle said.

    We were left scratching our heads last week when county officials, the Board of Supervisors, Lakeport and Clearlake elected officials and others in local government scheduled an "historic" meeting focused on economic strategy and then followed that up later in the week with a lot of doom and gloom scenarios at the BOS meeting where the county unveiled a plan in response to financial troubles including a significant reduction in staffing allocations by 2022. The Dec. 5 meeting consisted of Sonoma State University professor and economist Robert Eyler, a consultant with the County, presenting the fruits of his labor after speaking on the topic of economic growth at numerous pubic community forums where he gathered input from residents.

    The doors opened at the Clearlake Walmart at 7 a.m. for the first wave of 110 children to shop for $200 worth of Christmas goods with local cops. Detective Todd Dunia with the Lake County Sheriff's Office said the approximately 45 law enforcement officers came from around the lake, including California Highway Patrol, state parks, fish and game, probation, Lakeport and Clearlake Police Departments and Lake County's District Attorney investigators.

    The City of Clearlake and the County of Lake expect to receive federal funding to support recovery from the Sulphur Fire of 2017 to build apartments in areas that were hit hardest by the relatively small but destructive blaze. Of $124 million allocated to California by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for "unmet needs" in recovery from the wildfires of 2017, Clearlake is eligible to receive $1,114,570 and the County of Lake could receive $43,413.
