    On a recent drive home from Chico to the upper Paradise ridge, I found myself behind a car featuring a bumper sticker supporting the National Rifle Association and another bearing the slogan: "Freedom, Not Free Stuff." For those who know how to read the code, that was a daily double of right wing nuttery, bearing the none-too-subtle message that liberals, Democrats, or the left in general are all about confiscating guns from real Americans and giving away their hard-earned money to layabouts and n'er do wells, mostly people of color.

Plants in this family are also called composites because they have composite flower heads made up of a central disk of tiny flowers without petals, surrounded by ray flowers that do have petals, so each "flower" head is actually composed of multiple flowers.

    Chico police closed a stretch of road downtown Friday morning after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and possibly suffered serious injuries, police said. The crash happened about 8:15 a.m. on Oroville Avenue, between the 800 blocks of Main Street and Broadway, where a male pedestrian was struck by a white Lexus four-door sedan, police officer Ed Marshall said.

The man, Adam Parsons, 44, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday and was held to answer on charges including multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft and robbery.

    Five firefighters from a Chico-based private company were injured when a truck rolled over Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 5. One firefighter suffered a major injury and the rest were classified as minor when a truck belonging to Firestorm Wildland Fire Suppression Inc. of Chico rolled over, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman. Driver Kevin Crone, 32, of Magalia and three passengers were taken to St. Elizabeth with minor injuries, the spokesman said.
