    A Cheshire man was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol early Thanksgiving morning when his vehicle careened into a traffic pole and nearly struck a front porch on Orchard Street in Adams. Christopher Gray, 31, was at the wheel about 1 a.m. Nov. 24 when he struck the pole, then crossed the road and drove up an embankment, stopping just short of a fire hydrant and a residence's front porch, according to the affidavit filed by Adams Police Sgt.

    The speed limit on Fred Mason Road in Cheshire is 30 miles per hour, but police allege Nathan Reiter was driving nearly twice that or more when his Nissan careened off the road and struck a tree. Reiter, 20, of Pittsfield, is alleged to be at fault for the death of his 19-year-old passenger, Robert Pearson, of Dalton, by both speeding and crossing over the road's center line before losing control of the car on Oct. 7. Police responded to the scene in the early morning hours, where Reiter allegedly told them he had been driving toward Pittsfield and swerved to avoid an animal, according to the probable cause report filed by Massachusetts State Trooper Timothy Cooper.
