Two Western Carolina University faculty members assisted on a recently released award-winning film that chronicles efforts to revitalize the Cherokee language in Western North Carolina. Hartwell Francis, director of WCU's Cherokee language program, and Tom Belt, coordinator of the program and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, were interviewed and credited as associate producers for "First Language - The Race to Save Cherokee." The Hugh Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution welcomed Lloyd Arneach as their guest speaker Nov. 8. Arneach is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and an accomplished storyteller. He has told stories at the Kennedy Center, at the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D. C., and at the Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival in Canada.
